Keeping your OpenNebula up-to-date is very important, as you will receive the latest functionality and, more importantly, the latest security patches. It is possible to upgrade to the latest OpenNebula release from earlier versions.

Hypervisor Compatibility

The upgrade procedure can be followed regardless of the hypervisor.

How Should I Read This Chapter

You only need to read this chapter if you are upgrading OpenNebula to a newer release. Make sure you have read the Release Notes and particularly the Compatibility section first.

This guide describes the upgrade procedure for systems that are already running OpenNebula 6.0.x or newer. The upgrade will preserve all current users, hosts, resources, and configurations, for both SQLite and MySQL/MariaDB back-ends.

Read the Compatibility Guide and Release Notes to learn what’s new in OpenNebula 7.2.

Previous Steps

OpenNebula 7.0 or newer is distributed with onecfg as part of the main server package. This tool simplifies the upgrade process of configuration files, and is always included in the latest version of OpenNebula.

Upgrading Single Front-End

Important

If you haven’t done so, please enable the OpenNebula and needed 3rd party repositories before attempting the upgrade process.

Upgrading from 6.x and higher

Step 1. Check Virtual Machine Status

Before proceeding, make sure you don’t have any VMs in a transient state (prolog, migrate, epilog, save). Wait until these VMs get to a final state (running, suspended, stopped, done). (For more information on the life cycle of Virtual Machines, please see Virtual Machine Instances.)

Upgrading High Availability Clusters

Step 1. Check Virtual Machine Status

Before proceeding, make sure you don’t have any VMs in a transient state (prolog, migrate, epilog, save). Wait until these VMs get to a final state (running, suspended, stopped, done). For more information on the life cycle of Virtual Machines, see Virtual Machine Instances.

Step 2. Set All Hosts to Disable Mode

Set all Hosts to disable mode to stop all monitoring processes.

Upgrading Federated Instances

This version of OpenNebula introduces some changes in the federation data model. You need to coordinate the upgrade across zones and upgrade them at the same time.

Restoring Previous Version

If for any reason you need to restore your previous OpenNebula, follow these steps:

With OpenNebula 7.2 still installed, restore the DB backup using onedb restore -f
Uninstall OpenNebula 7.2, and install your previous version again.
Copy back the backup of /etc/one you did to restore your configuration.

Upgrading from Previous Versions
